Mental Border-Crossing eVISA Application
School for Innovators Thinking Expedition
Association for Managers of Innovation (AMI)
Summer 2010 - Estes Park, Colorado

This Expedition eVISA request is a key element in our design process for the upcoming School for Innovators Thinking Expedition on which you will be a team member. We use the information to design the overall flow, timing and route we will follow, as well as to highlight exploration and discovery areas. Your input is vital since you bring much of the expedition's knowns and unknowns with you.

EXPEDITION OBJECTIVES: We will be exploring and climbing MT. INNOVATION (elevation: unknown), perhaps best described as a "MESS" - a complex collection of inter-related issues, problems, challenges, opportunities, background and history.

In Creative Problem Solving (CPS) parlance, Mt. Innovation is perhaps best described as a "MESS" - a complex collection of inter-related issues, problems, challenges, opportunities, background and history - the stuff we all deal with every day as Managers of Innovation. Each of us almost certainly sees Mt. Innovation from a different angle, different perspective and… perhaps from previous unsuccessful climbing attempts. We will be making a Summit Attempt in small rope teams of three or four mental climbers. I would like to see us then publish the discoveries and results of the Expedition as an AMI White Paper - we haven't done that in a long time. The work we have already done during AMI meetings on Great Life Guides should be a part of that.

TIP: We frequently receive very brief, cursory answers rather than the longer, in-depth answers. To alert you to our expectations for the "size" of the reply we would like, you will find numbers in parentheses following each question/entry item. For instance, the question "SOME CRITICAL ISSUES AND CHALLENGES I FACE (3-5)" indicates that we would like you to reply with at least 3-5 lines (or sentences) which should bring out 5-6 issues and challenges. Think of them as a a series of Blue Slips.

Put simply LONGER ANSWERS ARE MUCH MORE USEFUL!

The answers to each question will be synthesized and organized into summaries that we will use during the Thinking Expedition. They will also give us a head start as the baseline for a White Paper which we can share back into AMI.

This is your opportunity to shape the direction, focus and design of the Thinking Expedition - and to spend some time really thinking about it. Several of the questions may not appear to relate or be of value (such as 11, 12 and 13). Please trust your guide - ALL your answers and thoughts at this stage are extremely valuable to our design.

While we will integrate and synthesize the information from all the team members' eVISAs, your personal input will be kept confidential.

NOTE: School for Innovators Expeditions are mentally and physically intense. The days start early and end late, with the team's excitement and energy often driving the group - midnight is not unusual. Meals and breaks are largely unscheduled, taken when the opportunity presents itself. Basecamp is at 7,500 feet and outdoor activities sometimes move to as high as 12,000 feet. All that being said, if you are able to handle a brisk two or three mile walk at home, you should be able to participate fully. A daily walk of two to three miles is the best way to prepare yourself physically for the outdoors work. Conditions ranging from diabetes to four months pregnant to multiple sclerosis have not limited participation in the School for Innovators.

The outdoors work of every School for Innovators Expedition is tailored to fit the profile of the group. Answering the following questions will help us begin that assessment:

21. Please list the sports/exercise/fitness programs in which you regularly engage?

22. Please provide a brief history of back, knee, or shoulder problems, heart, respiratory conditions, altitude sickness, or any other conditions which you feel might effect your performance on the expedition?

23. Please list any dietary constraints (foods you cannot eat - or don't like to eat)?

24. Dates/timeframes that could work for me this summer are (please list several):

25. Dates/timeframes that will not work for me this summer are (please list several):

26. Preferred days (Ideally we need three overnights):

  • Thursday PM - Sunday PM
  • Thursday AM - Sunday PM
  • Friday PM - Monday PM
